Staten the Hero: Four Vignettes

by Kit the Wolfy

Daylight

Staten didn't wear a cape.

There was no need to.

After all, he had wings, and big ones at that.

They flared themselves out now, as he posed beneath the moon in front of a cowering criminal.

The man had been little more than a bank robber, a juvenile delinquent if anything. Staten would put a stop to his actions before he could get any worse.

"W-who are you?" the criminal whimpered. Staten had been a terrifying force of nature, in his eyes. With wings that could propel him through the air like a jet liner, the strength of a hundred men, skin like stone, and the most fearsome glare this side of the Pyrenees, Staten was the cream of the crop when it came to gargoyles. It was a good thing he fought for the side of good rather than evil.

"I am Staten the Gargoyle!" the heroic gargoyle thundered. "Lord of the Night and Punisher of the Wicked! Repent for your crimes, evildoer!"

The thief broke into terrified sobbing and curled up into a fetal position. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" he bawled. "I'll never do it again! I promise! Please don't kill me!"

Staten smirked. "As if I'd waste a killing on the likes of you," he sneered. "Return what you stole, and turn yourself in, or face my wrath!"

"O-okay..." The criminal shakily got up and stumbled away with a glance of fear at the imposing monster. Staten crossed his arms and said nothing, merely taking flight to observe as the robber returned to the bank he had stolen from and given back the money he had taken, before giving himself up to the police.

The gargoyle dusted his hands off, and smiled to himself as he flew back to his home.

All in a day's work.

Midnight

Crime rings were the most annoying things to destroy. The minute you got the kingpin of one arrested, another sprung up in their place.

The only way to destroy one completely was to take it out in one fell swoop.

Luckily, Staten was good at that kind of thing. He had many dark powers at his disposal that could be used for picking off individuals or wide-ranged offenses as he pleased.

Currently, the gargoyle was crouched atop a building, quietly regarding a business deal between two crime rings native to his home city. All the members of both were there. They had done horrible things- theft, propaganda, destruction, murder, and worse.

The creature of the night smiled thinly to himself. They were ripe for the picking. He stretched a hand up to the moon, calling upon the forces of darkness that had created him and blessed him with their power. An orb of pure night coalesced in Staten's palm, a manifestation of fear agony wrapped in thunder and darkness.

With a gentle motion, Staten threw it down to the scene of the illicit deal.

It was over in seconds. Staten could hear the screams of the damned criminals as the darkness washed over them, obscuring them from view under a black miasma that lances of purple electricity arced through.

There was no trace left of any of them once it was over. Staten nodded, his smile vanishing. Idly, he brushed back his brown hair with the hand that had thrown the killing weapon, and he sighed. It was not easy to take a life, and it was especially not easy to take so many lives. But if it was to save the innocent humans who he lived among, Staten would gladly dispose of any criminal in any way necessary.

The gargoyle spread his wings, and took flight. It had been a long night.

Dusk

For so long, he had been an upholder of justice. Always catching the bad guy, sending them to jail and foiling their evil plot with no lives lost.

But now...

Now, Staten could not believe his eyes. The gargoyle stood in the ruins of an office building, blown to kingdom come by the battle that had taken place half an hour ago.

He had dirtied himself. Staten looked down at his stony grey hands. They were covered in blood, and deep down, Staten knew that the blood would never wash off.

The villain had been stopped, nonetheless. Staten could see the mastermind's body, sprawled over a broken-down door. The gargoyle quietly paced over to the man.

He had been a horrible man in life- hurting and exploiting others with dark magic for the sake of profit. But he had been human, and he had loved someone, once.

Slowly, Staten knelt down, straightening the villain's clothes and placing him in a resting position.

The most that he could do was ensure that his enemy had a dignified death.

When he was finished, the gargoyle spread his dark wings, and took off into the sunset sky without a word.

Dawn

Staten Stoneheart had never thought he'd be accepted. He was a gargoyle after all- a creature of stone and darkness, who only fought for good under the cover of night, safe from prying eyes.

But here he was, in broad daylight, being fawned over by the adoring masses.

For the first time in his life, Staten the gargoyle blushed.

A reporter for the channel 7 news came up to him, microphone in hand, and asked a question. Something about who he was. Staten smiled shyly in response, and gave this answer.

"I'm Staten Stoneheart, the gargoyle. I vow to protect this city from any evildoers who may harm it!" he said triumphantly. The crowd broke into cheers, and Staten began to cry tears of joy. He was accepted. He was loved.

All was well.
Four short vignettes for SuperSaiyanPony33 , depicting Staten Stoneheart, his gargoyle OC, as a superhero, in four distinctly different flavors:

Daylight: A full hero.
Midnight: An antihero.
Dusk: A full hero who has become an antihero.
Dawn: An antihero who has become a full hero.

My favorite is probably Midnight. Please enjoy.
